Subject: The 5th Virtual Training Workshop on Bioinformatics

Dear Lecturers of the Virtual Training Workshop on Bioinformatics and friends:

Thank you for your contributions in the 4th Virtual Training Workshop on Bioinformatics in 2010, organized by Asian Bioinformatics Research and Education Network (ABREN). The 4th Workshop was successful, drawing 1,869 participants from 76 countries, and there were 6,695 accesses to the streaming of 93 lectures. Now we are planning the 5th Virtual Training Workshop on Bioinformatics for two months starting from December. A Web site for the 5th Workshop will be open on Nov. 4th for registrations at:

http://www.abren.net/workshop/

Many of you contributed lectures in the last Workshop. We would like to ask you whether we can re-post your lectures in the 5th Workshop, or you'd like to renew them, or create some new lectures. You can check your lectures at the last Workshop:

http://gibk21.bio.kyutech.ac.jp/abren2010/abren/

User ID: guest

Pa**word: guest

If you have not contributed lectures yet, we would like to invite you or your colleagues to contribute lectures. In order to prepare lectures, please follow the attached guideline. We will make all the lectures in the form of video plus PowerPoint tt slides synchronized together.

We are now building a new ABREN system to expand the scope of the ABREN activity. In the new system, we provide some on-line lectures all the year round (to open public or to registered members), in addition to the regular closed workshop. We will also expand the field beyond bioinformatics, and provide various styles of educational materials (tutorials/demos of softwares and databases; experimental protocols; programming; lectures for laymen, etc.). We plan to finish the new system by the end of the workshop so that we can transfer to the new system.

We are looking forward to hearing from you about the lecture, and your opinions and suggestions about the workshop and the ABREN activities will be appreciated.

Best regards,

Akinori Sarai

Workshop Chair

Guidelines for the multimedia lecture preparation

General precaution for material preparation
This workshop is a closed event for registered users only, but the lecture materials may be exposed for a restricted public, and some materials may become downloadable upon the lecturers consent. Thus, if you use any figures or charts from a third party for preparing the lectures, we advise that prior consent be acquired and care be taken not to violate any copyrights of a third party. ABREN will not be responsible for any trouble caused by the violation of copyrights of such lectures.

Lecture format:
Students may not be able to concentrate if lectures are long and continuous. In order to make lectures more effective, the lectures should include hands-on practices or a**ignments in each session. So, please try to prepare your lecture as one unit of about 20 minutes including hands-on practices or a**ignments at the end. If your talk is more than 20 minutes, it may be broken into 20 minutes sessions.

Preparation of synchronized multimedia lectures:

(1) Preparation of lecture.
Prepare your lecture within the above time duration and create PowerPoint files accordingly. Prepare PowerPoint files for each session separately. When you need to go back and forth the slides, please insert the same slides, i.e., do not actually go back. This will avoid the complications of post-processing.

(2) Recording of lecture.
While recording your lectures, we suggest that the video includes the screen as well as yourself, just like a talk at the workshop or lecture, so that students know which part of slide you are explaining. The screen in the video need not be readable, because the PowerPoint slides will be shown in a separate window in the final product. Use a stick rather than a laser pointer to point out the places in the slide, as the laser may not be visible in the video. Before starting the lecture, activate “Rehearse Timings” in the PowerPoint menu, in order to record the timing of PowerPoint slides during the lecture. This timing information is necessary to create the synchronized multimedia product.

(3) Production of multimedia material from the movie and the PowerPoint slides.
In this workshop, lectures will be shown as a combination of movie, slides and audio in a synchronized manner. We will use Flash Media format only. Record your lectures in home video, and send us the video in DVD (MPEG2 format) and the corresponding PowerPoint file. We can convert it into the Flash format and make the final multimedia product.

About US:

The Institute for Molecular Infection Biology (IMIB) was founded in 1993 as an interdisciplinary institution at the Medical Faculty of the University of Würzburg. Members of the institute research biological problems of pathogens and infectious diseases, with an emphasis on molecular mechanisms, and lecture in university seminars and practical courses to biology, medical and dental students. Education of graduate students is a major focus at IMIB, and the institute is involved in the International Graduate School (GSLS) of the University of Würzburg.

IMIB research involves studies of bacteria, parasites and fungi, as well as their eukaryotic host, in a wide range from eukaryotic or bacterial cell biology and immunology to fundamental aspects of gene regulation. Following the successful start with Prof. Jörg Hacker as the founding director, Prof. Jörg Vogel has been chair of the institute since 2009.

Organisms store their genetic information in the form of DNA. Ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) catalyzes the sole de novo pathway that provides building blocks for the DNA biosynthesis. RNR is an essential enzyme in all free-living organisms and was a prerequisite for DNA-based life on Earth. Different cla**es of RNR have different oxygen requirements, and the repertoire of RNR cla**es in an organism is therefore likely to limit its ecological reach. The project involves studies on the types and occurrences of RNR genes in contemporary organisms and metagenomes to further our understanding of the evolution of the RNR genes, and the influence that environmental factors have on their current distributions, e.g. via horizontal gene transfer events.
